Veel moderne R&B lijkt te zijn gemaakt voor de nacht, maar Dragonfruit is zo’n act waarbij je het daglicht vol gloed tegemoet lacht. De band laat namen als de Canadese producer Kaytranada, J Dilla en Mahalia vallen als toetsstenen: soepele ritmes, samples die als een regen kleurrijke M&M’s uit de hemel lijken te vallen, en natuurlijk het speelse stemgeluid van Danique van der Vlugt. Internationaal is Dragonfruit goed aan de weg aan het timmeren: het verbluffende debuut Gears Of The Giant Machine schotelt ons een oase aan frisse klankkleuren, melodieën en sensaties voor.

A lot of modern R&B records seem made for the night, but Dragonfruit is one of those acts that makes you smile into the daylight glow. The band namedrops the likes of Canadian producer Kaytranada, J Dilla and Mahalia as touchstones: smooth as silk rhythms, samples that seem to fall from the sky like a rain of colorful M&Ms, and of course the coy vocal delivery of Danique van der Vlugt. Internationally, Dragonfruit is making good progress as well: stunning debut Gears Of The Giant Machine presents us with an oasis of fresh sound textures, melodies and sensations.
